The mountain route through Cloudcroft

Traveling east, the descent after Cloudcroft reverses the same 16 miles of steep grade. The freeway alternative through Las Cruces and El Paso runs about 227 miles. The route over the mountains is the scenic choice.
Why the operating hours force the itinerary
The cleanest sequence puts White Sands first and the cave last:
- Day 1: Spend the afternoon and sunset at White Sands, then stay in Alamogordo.
- Day 2: Cross the Sacramento Mountains, stop in Cloudcroft, continue through Artesia, attend the evening bat flight in season, and stay in Carlsbad.
- Day 3: Enter Carlsbad Caverns in the morning on the timed reservation.
The Bat Flight Program runs at dusk during the season, roughly May through October. That evening event can follow the transfer day without using the cave-entry window.
Book the Carlsbad timed-entry reservation through Recreation.gov. It costs $1 per person and becomes available up to 30 days ahead. The reservation is separate from the entrance fee.
Stops between the parks
The New Mexico Museum of Space History in Alamogordo is closed on Tuesdays and adult admission is roughly $8. Confirm current hours and admission before building the day around it.
Cloudcroft is an 1899 railroad-era mountain village and the route’s built-in cool break. Artesia is the practical fuel and food stop before the southern run. Whites City is at the national park turnoff and is the last stop before the caverns.
Seasonal cautions on US-82
Monsoon afternoons run from July through September. Plan dune time and mountain driving for mornings during that season.

Three Rivers Petroglyph Site, managed by the Bureau of Land Management, fits the US-54 approach on the White Sands side. The fee is $7 per vehicle.
